Antlers advance, Avispa stunned in Emperor's Cup

The third round of the 2017 Emperor’s Cup took place on Wednesday night, and despite the dominance of J1 sides there were still several upsets to be had.

The biggest shock of the night took place at K’s Denki Stadium, where Seiya Nakano’s pair of headers gave the University of Tsukuba a 2-1 win over Avispa Fukuoka.

The fourth-year student, who has scored five goals in the tournament thus far, has already agreed to join Jubilo Iwata next season.

Goals from Taaki Shiichi and Serginho were enough to give Matsumoto Yamaga a 2-1 win over Sagan Tosu, while Omiya Ardija needed a pair of goals in the 119th and 123rd minutes to triumph 3-2 over Ehime FC.

Iwaki FC saw their magical run end in a 2-0 defeat at Shimizu S-Pulse, while Fagiano Okayama fell 1-0 at AC Nagano Parceiro.

Urawa Reds earned their first competitive clean sheet since May 31 in a 1-0 win against Roasso Kumamoto, while defending champions Kashima Antlers breezed to a 5-0 win at Montedio Yamagata.

The match between Vanraure Hachinohe and Nagoya Grampus was suspended midway through the second half due to a severe thunderstorm.

The two sides will meet again on August 2, with the JFA to decide later whether the match will be replayed in its entirety or resume with Grampus leading 1-0.

The draw for the Round of 16 will take place on August 7.
